Old Barn Converted Into A Modern Farmhouse With An Authentic Design
Being able to see potential in what others may consider a ruin beyond any hope is definitely something not many people can do. That’s exactly what makes projects such as this one so special. In 2013 the drastic transformation of an old barn located in Sprundel, the Netherlands started, when the current owners purchased the property. The estate consisted of a stable, a storage shed and a small house in between them. It was studio Van Os Architecten who managed to convert everything into a modern and inviting farmhouse in 2016.
Although in very bad shape, the original old barn had a lot of charm and plenty of potentialQuite a few of the old features were preserved. For example, these are the original wooden beamsAnother important feature is the original brick wall inside the house which the owners fell in love with
Although the barn was in very bad shape, a lot of the elements were worth preserving. It was the interior brick wall and the beautiful view that first caused the owners to fall in love with this place. They wanted to highlight these elements along with a few other ones such as the original flooring, the wooden trusses and the wooden cladding on the outside walls. They also wanted the original shape of the roof to be retained, even though the roof itself had to be replaced completely. After a lot of work, the transformation was complete and the once derelict barn became a beautiful and inviting house, a dream home.
The new design is a wonderful blend of old and new and takes advantage of the location and the viewThe interior living area is very bright and airy and enjoys a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapeThe high ceiling and exposed wooden beams are a wonderful combination which gives the living area lots of characterThe staircase is cleverly hidden behind bookshelves, maintaining a low profileThe wooden beams and brick wall give the house a rustic-industrial vibe and make it feel extra warm and cozyThe kitchen is part of the open floor plan together with the dining room and the living areaOverall, the color palette is reduced to a few neutrals meant to complement the original elementsThe concrete floor adds an industrial vibe to the house and also gives it a modern feelThe brick wall was left exposed and empty, becoming a focal point for the entire houseThe rest of the walls have a clean white look which allows the wooden trusses to stand out even moreNew large windows and glass doors create a strong connection between the house and its immediate surroundingsThe custom-made furniture is very simple and modern, focused mainly on functionalityThe original shape of the roof was preserved, giving the upstairs area a really cozy lookAlthough the roof shape does mean a smaller usable area overall, it adds a lot of authentic charm to the houseA fireplace was embedded into a space divider here, marking the separation between the functionsThe skylights create a really airy and spacious vibe, making up for the loss of space
