Modern Lodge Disguised As Traditional Using Wooden Shingles
The Mullin Lodge is a very special project which studio AVON Arquitectos completed in 2018. It’s a house located in Southern Chile, in a rural area surrounded by native forests. Its design is a modern interpretation of the traditional small dwellings specific to the region. That means opaque facades all around except for a single glazed side. In order to maintain this old look throughout the exterior, the architects used recycled wooden shingles on the facades. Of course, for every traditional feature there’s also something modern to balance things out. Inside, lots of the non-structural walls have been removed and this results in a continuous look and very clean and airy spaces.

This charming 120 square meter house enjoys a N-W orientation which allows it to enjoy lots of sunlight which makes the most of through its fully-translucent facade section and skylights. The interior is organized into three big sections. There’s a public area which includes the kitchen, dining room and sitting area, a private zone towards East which houses the bedrooms and the bathrooms and a Western space which has a corridor and an informal dining room. The social zone also has a mezzanine which gives it a little bit more space to play with and also means a higher ceiling, more windows to let in the light and the views and skylights.
